Why do you need my blood pressure reading?
Some medications can cause an increased risk of certain serious side effects if your blood pressure is too high or too low. Our providers need to have a recent reading to be sure that you won't be at risk of a heart attack, stroke, or worse.
When in doubt, always ask your provider for additional clarification, and they’ll be happy to help!
How can I get a blood pressure reading?
- Contact your doctor: If you have a blood pressure reading from your doctor from the past 6 months, you can contact them and request that they provide the reading to you.
- Go to a pharmacy: Many pharmacies have machines that can read your blood pressure. Reach out to the pharmacy if you have any questions or need assistance.
- Do your own reading: If you have an at-home blood pressure monitor, you may use that to obtain a reading.
What do the numbers in a blood pressure reading mean?
When checking your blood pressure, you’ll receive two numbers:
- Systolic: This is the top number. It is the maximum blood pressure during the contraction of the heart ventricles.
- Diastolic: This is the bottom number. It is the minimum pressure recorded before the next contraction.
If you are asked for a blood pressure reading, please make sure to provide both numbers.
