Why we may need a blood pressure reading
Some medications can cause an increased risk of certain serious side effects if your blood pressure is too high or too low. Our providers need to have a recent reading to be sure that you won't be at risk of heart attack, stroke, or worse.
When in doubt, always ask your provider for additional clarification and they’ll be happy to help!
How to find your blood pressure
- Contact your doctor: Have a reading with a doctor within the last 6 months? Your doctor can provide your blood pressure reading directly to you.
- Go to a pharmacy: Most pharmacies have machines that can read your blood pressure. Ask the pharmacy team for assistance should you have any questions.
- Do your own reading: Reading your blood pressure can be easily done at home with your own blood pressure monitor.
How to read your blood pressure reading
When checking your blood pressure, you’ll receive two numbers:
- Systolic: This is the top number. It is maximum blood pressure during the contraction of the ventricles.
- Diastolic: This is the bottom number. It is the minimum pressure recorded prior to the next contraction.
- Example: You may receive a reading like (130/90). We’ll want both numbers to best assist you.
